Pathological Aardwolf Skull #01385

This is the skull of an aardwolf!

The aardwolf is a small, striped, insect-eating mammal native to Africa. It is actually a species of hyena: the smallest extant species and the last surviving member of the “dog-like” hyena lineage. Hyena skulls are highly coveted and getting harder to find. In our experience, aardwolves are rarer than spotted hyenas – we’ve only ever had a few examples.
This is a nice adult example of the species in good condition. Interestingly, it has areas of pathology on the mandible, possibly indicating a bone infection. It has slight damage to the right zygomatic arch, but is otherwise excellent. Please review all pictures and description for condition.
This specimen is not from an ESA-listed species and is legal to sell and possess. US sales only, sorry!
